Hi Colin

John Barclay and his family were in Duddingston 1851 as you rightly say.   They relocated to Dalkeith by 1861 and it was there his first wife Helen died.  He later remarried and a further move took him to Leith and as far as the rest of the family are concerned, settled there.

The death Colin mentioned is well worth a look. There was another daughter Isabella born on 26/3/1872 in Duddingston and the parents are correct (couldn't resist a look) birth registered by her father.

Depending on who registered the 1877 death for John Barclay they could have his mother's maiden name totally wrong. It happened often.

Meant to say Leith is only around 3 miles from Duddingston.

Hello Dorrie

You will note I have the daughter Isabella born (1872) on the 1881 census and 1891 census (Scotlands people) on my opening query.  I will give Colin's suggestion a go.

Just downloaded the death cert for John Barclay, except for the mother's maiden surname (Wilson) all else fits.  The informant was son George and surprised at the error given that Howden (John Barclay's mother's m.s.) features a number of times through the generations.   That said on the marriage certificate of John Barclay to Elisabeth Isbister, her father was named Robert when in fact he was Thomas.

Many thanks, Colin for the suggestion, to Dorrie and Rosie for prompting me to take a look.

Kind Regards, Roy
