1871 census conundrum - Joshua Walker
« on: Friday 23 April 21 17:35 BST (UK) »
I wonder if greater minds than mine can unravel an issue I have.

I have traced my Walker line back through the census and have reliable connections until I get to 1871.

The 1871 census record is split across 2 pages and is as follows:

RG10 - Piece 477 - Folio 64 - Pg 21 & 22

9 Gibraltar Walk, Bethnal Green

Narcissus Pinch - Head - 32 - Chairmaker
Caroline      "    - Wife  - 29
Caroline      "    - Dau   - 9   - Scholar
Narcissus    "    - Son   - 7   -     "
Joshua        "    - Son   - 3   -     "
Celia ????    "    - Dau  - 9mo -
Joseph Walker    - Bro in law - 9
Next page ---- still 9 Gibraltar Walk ----
Thos Walker       - Son   - 28 - Typefounder
Joshua  "           - Son   - 23 - Tinker
Ann      "           - Dau   - 19 - Needle Hand
Jane     "           - Dau   - 17 -         "
William "           - Son   - 13
Narcissus  "       - Son   - 11 - Scholar

So the person I have been tracking back is Joshua Walker age 23 - Tinker - BUT -

He can't be the "son" of Narcissus Pinch because of the ages and in fact none of the Walkers can be sons or daughters of Narcissus Pinch.

Joseph Walker - Bro in law - 9 could be but there is an age difference of 20 years between Caroline (wife) and Joseph.

So any thoughts?

If it's any help a Narcissus Pinch married a Caroline Walker on 19 May 1861
at   St James, Shoreditch, Hackney, England

I don't know the span of children in Caroline's birth family, but if she was the oldest, Joseph could be the youngest at 9 months, for example.
--------
I took "Celia" as Opila, maybe you can find a birth of an Ophelia Pinch.

-------
The rest is a mystery, just looking at this one record. You'll have to find all the other records for the Walkers and Pinches to see how they actually fit together.

If you look at 1861 Caroline, Joshua and others, including Narcissus are the children of Thomas Walker aged 41 and Elizabeth aged 40 - 17 Temple St, Bethnal Green.

You could 'collect' those children as Walkers.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

ah that makes sense Joseph Walker being the brother of Caroline - I wonder if his age is wrongly recorded ie he is older than Caroline and quite possibly the father of all the Walkers. Further investigation required!!
