Help Reading Early 1700s Baptism Entry
« on: Saturday 24 April 21 17:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am currently researching my 5xGG's line, the Minsons, and I am trying to create a list of all the children born to her grandfather, Robert Minson and his wife, Avis. I can't find a baptism entry for Robert and I am wondering if the name of his first son could give me any clues.

He was born November 20th 1718 in Kingstone, Somerset (see picture 1):

November 20 1718 [illegible] was baptised [illegible] the son of R..... Minson Avis his wife.

EDIT: I just realised it is the word after baptised that I am looking for. Is it John?

On the opposite page there is also a note about Robert Minson but I have no idea what it says, other than something about King George (see picture 2). Don't think the dates are relevant as they had their last child in 1734 but thought I would include it anyway.

I would be really grateful if someone could help me decipher what they say.

Thanks in advance!

Queenie  :)

On page 2.  Line 2 - I think the last two words are: god save
            and:
Line 3 - King George and all is one.

and and pen god save
king George and all is me[n]

(Was he the parish clerk or churchwarden?)

ADDED
The list of years looks like the birth years of the Minson children. See the previous page of the register, image #3 of 30).

Thank you Bookbox and Rhododendron for deciphering it for me.

I have just realised what all the dates correspond to...

They are the birth years of the children of Robert Minson jnr born 1720, the son of the Robert Minson I was talking about! It was written in the Kingstone book twice, it was crossed out and then it was rewritten a few pages into the book (there are only 30 pages). Listed is my ancestor Sarah who was the last child born to Robert jnr and his wife, Mary, in 1758.

Now I'm really confused  ???

I looked through the whole book and there are lots of doodles and column addition and the name Minson seems to pop up in strange places...

The note I attached in my previous post was at the beginning of the book (1716) when Robert jnr hadn't even been born. Is it possible he had something to do with the book at a later date and felt he could scribble notes wherever? Unfortunately, Robert jnr's will has been lost but his father was a yeoman - I don't think they would have been parish clerks or wardens. The boys in the family could write (at least their name) but the girls couldn't. Although, it is unusual for children to be listed together in a 'block,' usually the entries are in date order.

Did you read the archive note on the flyleaf, about the pages of the register being unbound and the entries in a confused order (image #1 or 30)? It will probably be quite difficult to come up with a chronology for what was written when.

That's true. There was nothing else on the page so it could have been written around the time Robert jnr had his children. It would be interesting to know whether he had something to do with the book. Don't know how I would ever go about proving it though!
