Hughes name
« on: Sunday 25 April 21 11:26 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have recently checked for names that match my DNA in Ancestry when I put Hughes name in it came up with 258 Hughes names in different matching tree's now as yet I don't have any in my tree would it be that it is a very popular name or could there be a Hughes somewhere in my tree that I have not traced yet ?  I know it is a bit of a daft question as there could be lots more other names that come up with a high number it's just that I have been trying to trace a unknown great grandad and am really scraping the barrel.

Do you have any ancestors who are of Welsh/or Irish origin?

Yes, Irish mostly, should have worded it differently, it was 258 matching trees with Hughes in them.

It's a very common name, especially for those of us with Welsh ancestors. I have numerous matches who have Hughes in their trees.

I'm not really sure what your concern is. Maybe look at the trees and work out if they match each other (using shared matches).

I'm sure if I put a fairly common surname in the search it would produce a fair number of matches. The real question is - are they referring to the same Hugheses or just many different ones?

I've been tidying my tree this afternoon and thought of you!

I found many Williams but none are my ancestors - they are all affines

Thanks for that Gadget, it was just another attempt to find out who my great grandad was so was looking for a needle in a haystack really.

I found mt grt granddad eventually by isolating a small group who just matched each other and me.  I then worked on their trees and found the common theme, which finally led me to grt granddad. I then followed his line and found that I was able to link in more shared matches from his ancestors.

It took me a good while but I got there  :D

Have you joined GEDMatch so that you can run matches with people who have not tested with ancestry, but with other companies?
Coffey, Cummins [Rathfalla, Tipperary], Cummins [Skirke, Laois], Curran, Dillon [Clare], Fogarty [Garran, Laois/Tipp], Hughes, Keshan (Keeshan), Loughman [Harristown and Killadooley, Laois], Mallon [Armagh], Malone, Markham [Caherkine, Clare], McKeon(e) [Sligo/Kilkenny/Waterford], McNamara, Meagher, Prescott [Kilkenny/Waterford/Wexford?], Rafferty, Ryan, Sullivan, Tobin
