I can't see this marriage. He was still married to Deborah at this time.
I think that marriage was in 1838.  A son named Richard, born 1839, seen on 1841 census.

Thanks to all for your contributions.
I always thought the key to unlocking my query was to find the Atkinson / Nicholson link.
Based on a combination of the information you have kindly provided I can now update my tree with confidence. Next step is to find John Nicholson's father's birth (now think it may be 1792 based on Deborah's dob 1789) and death dates (1848 based on 1851 census where Hannah is a widow).
Look forward to your learn of your findings,
Jim

Burial for Deborah (Dobinson) AITKINSON 1836

Note: her age at death would fit with the birth found by Ladyhawk.

Just to help confirm this is the right lady, the newspaper edition Durham Chronicle 26 August 1836 has a brief death notice which states this Deborah was the wife of John Atkinson. Actual date of death was 22 Aug 1836.

Durham Chronicle 24 November 1848 states he was a shoemaker, date of death 17 Nov 1848.

If John had a son John who was also a shoemaker, this might belong to your family:
Durham County Advertiser 24 April 1846
Married
In this city, at St. Giles on Sunday last, Mr. John Atkinson, shoemaker, to Ann, daughter of Mr. Robt. Tuart, of the King's Arms Inn, Claypath Gates.
