Is that Richard Alexander Roberts, Yorkie?  It does look very like him.

Thank you very much Jim and Carol - your views and the links are massively helpful.

I had thought/hoped it might be a gentleman called Thomas Cockerill who lived in and around Scarborough (in Yorkshire, UK) from 1827 to 1914.  However, I can see that the stamp box really calls that into question. 

I don't know a Richard Alexander Roberts - who is he?

He was my great grandmother's brother in law. He's so like him. They lived in Normanton.
