John Lewis GORDON- did he set foot in New Zealand?
« on: Tuesday 27 April 21 07:57 BST (UK) »
I have found nothing about this man, my main interest being as to whether or not he was connected to Flora GORDON** whose name appears underneath his in the "Unclaimed Letters" column in 1864. His name can also be found in a similar column in 1863 but Flora's is not there.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ODT18640303.2.36.3?end_date=31-12-1864&query=flora+gordon&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1860

[**I know all about Flora Gordon after her arrival in New Zealand around 1864, but nothing prior to this. It is thought she was Scottish born; married William Carter in Dunedin in 1864. The details of her sad life are well documented in Papers Past.]

Hi Minniehah,

No mention of him as either John Lewis or just Lewis GORDON on the NZSG Kiwi Index v.2.

Hi Minnie

Another needle in the haystack :D  Perhaps he moved on without telling others where he was going?  Similar one in one of my trees.

Cheers

Nor any mention on NZBDM (Deaths), Archway or the NZSG Burial Locator v.2.

Perhaps he was only in the country for a very short time, if at all.

I'm beginning to think that he may not have set foot here at all. Perhaps telling those at home he was off to New Zealand but decided otherwise along the way.

I'm really curious to know if there was a connection between Flora and this man. Another brick wall I suspect.

Minniehaha.

Perhaps he did.  Spades might recall years ago, on another thread, someone said they had a postcard or similar stating New Zealand.  I questioned, perhaps not our NZ, but perhaps here ... New Zealand is a hamlet in the civil parish of Hilmarton in Wiltshire, England.

Just a thought, not saying that is the case, but something to look into.?

As a matter of possible interest there is a mention of the name in NSW.

In Feb 1882 a letter awaited GORDON, John Lewis at the General Post Office, Sydney
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/221702278

Notices appeared in 1883 too.

There was a criminal who used the name as an alias, but closer investigation shows his prison record with a birthdate of mid 1860's, so not the right one.

A mention of another of the name is made in a Victorian Newspaper. 1914
In Melbourne a son of "the late ……of Elgin Scotland....."  is engaged.
