Missing baptisms in Sheffield
« on: Wednesday 28 April 21 13:09 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon, I have a Sheffield family for whom I can find no baptisms (besides their first child).

I'm wondering if anyone has similar experience and has found the answer in a source unavailable online - I have tried FindMyPast, Ancestry and sites such as the Sheffield Indexers.

It is the family of John and Sarah Johnson (nee Rowbotham). They were married in 1821 at Sheffield. The children born in Sheffield:

Sarah Ann born 1826 (and baptised at St Peter's)
Maria born c.1828
Thomas born c.1829
George Wainwright born c.1835
John T. born c.1837
Mary Emma born 1838

I wonder if they were members of a smaller protestant denomination/non-conformists of some kind. The children who married did so in Anglican churches, although my ancestor George's children are also missing from baptism registers.

Thanks for any advice

I have a family with 9 children (1816-1835 births) and have only ever found baptisms for the first 5.

Don't have the answer I'm afraid but it does happen.

I would think there is a strong possibility that your assumption that they switched churches is correct. It was a time of religious upheaval. I found one relative in my husband's family who switched denominations at least twice in his lifetime. So they perhaps didn't baptise the later children, or they did but those records are lost.
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*
