William Field b1856 d1952
« on: Thursday 29 April 21 11:52 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to research my aunt's family. I've established that Wm Field is on the 1939 Register living with his son Albert's family and is given as a retired Coachman.
I found a Wm Field on the 1861 Census living in Edinburgh, born in Cavers, Roxboroughshire to Thomas Field, given as a Coachman and Janet, which could be him.
I can't find any information in Censuses or marriage records between 1861 and 1939. If anyone can help to fill in the 78 year gap and possibly, if Thomas is his father, the family earlier than Thomas, I'd be most grateful.
Harvey

Maybe it would be easier to track via Albert.

Do you know when/where he was born and who his mother was?

His birth registration should give mothers maiden name to look for a marriage for his parents.

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

There's a William Field of the right age, born Goudhurst, Kent, a coachman, with a son Albert born around 1889/90.  Easily found in the censuses 1881-1911.

Thanks to all for your responses and my apologies, I should have said that the reason I favored the 1861 Census in Edinburgh is that my aunt said that Albert came from Edinburgh. That is why I didn't consider the Kent data to be likely. Also, Coldstream, Berwickshire and Cavers, Roxboroughshire are close to the English border. Both Thomas, the possible father and their first born Janet were born in England, whilst the rest of the children were born in Cavers, which suggests after marrying they lived with Thomas' family and after starting their own family they moved to Cavers.
According to my aunt,  Albert was married to Elizabeth Campbell b1890, but I can find no record of there marriage.

You will have seen that Albert's birth date 31 July 1889 on the 1939 register ties in exactly with that shown on the baptism record from Rusthall, Kent that I posted earlier.

Albert's children per the 1939 Register: Laura (1913), Marian (1914), John(1923) and Audrey (1932) all had the mother's maiden name Towsey.

Albert Field and Elizabeth Towsey were married in Kensington in 1913.
