Downey inquest lookup
« on: Thursday 29 April 21 18:17 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the inquest of my ggg grandfather Mathew Downey 1813- 14/6/1878. His death cert mentions an inquest will be held 15/6/1878, he had injuries to his spine & head.
I have scoured the newspaper archives in Wales online & the local paper in Brecknockshire of the time.

Mm I don't remember, I've been on this trail for 20+ years but worth retracing my steps. I've been to Brecon library & got the newspaper of the year to find the article but to no avail.
Thank you, I'll ring tomorrow.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.  Could you give us some information regarding the incident and where it took place?  That would make the search a lot easier.

Many thanks

Not sure about that parish transcription.  From Genuki the parishes in the area:

"DEVYNNOCK, a parish in the hundred of Devynnock, in the county of Brecon, 7 miles S.W. of Brecknock. It is situated on the river Usk, and contains Ystradyelltey, Llanulid, Glyntawe, Llaniltid, Maescar, Glynn, and Senny. The great forest covers an area of 20,000 acres. The Roman road, Via Tulia, passed through the parish."

As you say, the spellings change a lot, often depending on whether the writer was Welsh or English.

I'm not sure about the name of his residence either.  I'll check on the old maps and see if there are any clues.

Regards

Mathew Downey was living in Llywel (aka Llywell) in the 1871 census in the parish of Ysclydach.  By coincidence this is the same parish  I lived in some years ago.  I'm still digging regarding the name of the property name.

Hi GS
The property is still there today spelt "Pantweddus" on the OS map. It's just outside the village of Pentre'r-felin , a mile or 2 from Sennybridge.
He is buried in the church Rhyd-y-briw ( now within Sennybridge camp)but with no headstone,  I haven't found the exact spot in the graveyard. I tried corresponding with someone in charge but I came unstuck.
I think the word after "Pantweddus " on cert is supposed to be Ysclydach.
I am grateful for all your help.

I've been trying to find Pantweddus on the map but as yet no such luck.*   The story of the death of the gamekeeper rings a bell for some reason.  Just wish I could remember where I read it originally.

I've been looking through the newspapers on the National Library of Wales site, but I suppose you've been through those too.  There are plenty of reports of game-keepers being shot (accidentally or otherwise) but so far no report of your man has come to light.

Regards
GS

*PS: Ah yes, finally found it! *
