Determining Parentage of Joseph Horton and Ellen E Challis
« on: Friday 30 April 21 17:08 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I was wondering if you could help me. I am currently doing a tree for a friend on Ancestry, looking into her family history, but I have hit a brick wall when it comes to the parentage of her paternal great grandparents. Their names were Joseph Horton (born in 1872) and Ellen Elizabeth Challis (born in 1895). So I was hoping you could help me. Here is what I know:

1. They married in 1927, but Ellen had the surname Bayliss, leading me to suspect she at least had been married before, further confirmed by Bayliss children appearing with Joseph and Ellen on the 1939 England and Wales Register.

2. They had a son called Thomas in 1933 who married a woman called Beryl Aldridge.

I suspect Ellen's parents might be John Thomas Challis and Lucy Mary Hannah Broomhall, but any help on Joseph's parents would be excellent and as he was so much older than Ellen I do suspect he was married before, please help if you can.

Sarah

Thanks, but that's not what I'm after. It's Joseph's parents in particular that I am looking for, but I will add this information to what I have.

If you obtain the marriage certificate of Joseph and Ellen - it will give father's names.

Hence you will obtain Ellen's maiden name for sure (and christian name of her father) and Joseph's father's name.

(The birth record of Thomas their son in 1933 from FreeBMD  - should also give her maiden name.)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Perhaps purchase of a marriage certificate may be the best answer, which may or may not give you the fathers' names.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

No I know and I appreciate it, I just hate hitting a wall like this, I'm usually really good at ferreting out information from the census data and so on, but this pairing is difficult to determine, probably because they were both married more than once.
