Do you know what his job was? I think the word looks quite like "savetier" (cobbler).  If the priest didn't know the first name for some reason - perhaps they weren't church-goers - he might have put the trade to distinguish this Chevillard from others.  Alternatively, it might be a nickname added on to the surname if there were a lot of Chevillards in the parish, again to distinguish families one from another.  Not that any of that is much help to you as you are looking for a first name.

No occupation reference on the two baptisms I have for his children. But on one of his children's marraige (whos baptism I cannot find) it might mention it?

The couple of words after it says Matthieu Chevillard and Marie Gatteau, ...

Kind of looks like finance? Might be nothing.

I can't help but wonder whether the bit after fille could be soi-disant (so-called)...

Hopefully not, as that could imply that that is not his proper/original name, which could make things (even) more difficult.  ???

I would defintiely say it is "de défunct", and after the names "les fiançailles ont été célébrées en cette église..." Nothing to do with finance, I'm afraid.

I agree with fiançailles - so their betrothal was celebrated in church.

Défunt(e) or feu(e) both mean late or deceased.
