About two-thirds of all WW1 Service Records were lost in a WW2 bombing raid.
Many lost to fire; the rest water damaged.

Unfortunately I can see no service record for William. A large number of records were destroyed in bombing during WW2.
The medal roll indicates he was a sergeant in 5/York Regiment when discharged.
He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, and the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
The theatre of war for him is recorded as "France".
