SOLVED: Levi children baptised around 20 years old
« on: Saturday 01 May 21 09:29 BST (UK) »
In my family tree, I've come across a Levi/Foggan family with the parents Henry Levi and Mary Rebecca Foggan married in Northumberland 1767, but end up living in Warmfield.

Their children I've found so far appear to have been baptised around 20 yrs old.

Samuel Levi - Born 9 Dec 1769 and Baptised 26 Apr 1785

Frances Levi - Born 1783 and Baptised 18 November 1802
Joseph Levi - Born 1777 and Baptised 18 November 1802

What would be the reason for the adult baptisms?
I understand the name Levi (Levy) is Jewish.

Some religious denominations don't do child baptisms, but only adult baptisms.
Baptist churches spring to mind.

Yes - they do have Jewish names -- but like KGarrad, Baptists came to my mind.

Baptists did not believe in 'infant sprinkling' as they called it. A person had to be old enough to demonstrate their understanding of the beliefs of the Baptist congregation and to renounce their sins.

The age of 'baptism' varied from congregation to congregation. Sometimes they could be as young as 15.

I wonder if your family changed their faith from Jewish to Baptist? Having said that - I don't know the tradition of the Jewish faith.

But, the images on Ancestry, certainly for the second two baptisms, would imply C of E baptisms, and from a different source in Ancestry (no image available) Samuel's baptism was at St Michael le Belfrey in York.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

However, I have 3 Wray boys born 1796, 1799 & 1804 in Hull Yorkshire who lived in a street directly opposite the massive Holy Trinity church.  The oldest two were not baptised until 1815 but the youngest one was baptised in 1804 as an infant.

So doesn't really appear to be any consistency to these things although one can make guesses.  The father died in 1804 so maybe that had something to do with it, but why not do the other 2 then rather than wait for a further 11 years.

Had they changed parishes I wonder?

I had Methodist ancestors and the older children were baptised twice when a new Methodist Chapel was built nearer to their home.

There is a report in The Leeds Intelligence of  5 Oct 1762 of a Jewish Liverpool Merchant ,Joseph Levi- renouncing his faith and being baptised at St Andrews, Liverpool as Robert Joseph Levi. The article went on to say "we hear that many more Jews intend following his Example".
