Pension records
« on: Saturday 01 May 21 11:40 BST (UK) »
I have attached a copy of my grandfather's pension record from WW1. Can anyone fill in any more information from the numbers etc? His war record does not exist any more.

What I know: He lived in Bristol, England and his service number was 270340. He was wounded twice: the first time he was gassed and transferred to the Labour Corps, the second time he was invalided out with shell wounds to the leg.

Thank you!

Thank you both for the help. :)

jim1 regarding the transfer to 359 Coy LC, does that mean Labour Corps? Where did you find this, and how can I find more information about this please?

I've found that the letters and numbers under his name probably refer to 613 Home Service Employment Company, another Labour Corps.

At the bottom of his card it has more letters and numbers, do you know what they might signify?

Thank you for any help you can give.

Yes.
This came from SWB roll which gives units he served overseas with.
First with the Gloucs. Regt. & secondly 359 Coy.
613 may have been his discharge Coy, it may only have been an admin. transfer.
613 was part of the Eastern Command.
359 was part of the Scottish Command.
At the moment I don't quite understand how 359 Coy would appear on his medal roll
if it was a home service coy.
More digging required.
The other numbers just look like office jargon.
Later:
Problem solved.
This is what his SWB roll entry looks like.
As you can see the next man's Coy (359) is in Henry Lockyers column
which gives the impression it was his.
My mistake.
So to clarify he served overseas only with the Gloucs. Regt. & was transferred to 613 Coy. LC.
(Eastern Command)
Is there anything on his pension ledger which may indicate which Btn.
he served in while in the Gloucs. Regt.?
As he was wounded while with 613 Coy. as part of the Eastern coastal defenses would
indicate a Zeppelin/Gotha aircraft attack.

Thanks for that, jim1.

Yes, sorry I do know what battalion he was in: 12th, 'Bristol's Own'. I have got a copy of the war diary, which has helped to flesh out what they were doing and when. I think his first 'wound' was being gassed on the Somme in July/Aug 1916. Certainly he was reported a casualty in the papers in August 1916.

Is the date of the award of the SWB likely to link with the second wound? It was awarded on 4th May 1918, and he was discharged with GSW to the leg which resulted in a compound fracture.

Yes he was discharged as being unfit to serve due to his 2nd. wound.
The actual event may have been some months earlier.
There were attacks on the East coast throughout the war.
