Birth Register of FIVE daughters in 1853, TOPIC COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 01 May 21 11:52 BST (UK) »
My GG Grandfather Henry Robinson was born in England but lived in Edinburgh, and was a successful Bookseller. He married a Scottish lady and had 10 children.

I have record of birth of the first two, and found the birth register in 1853 for the next five (with the five separate dates) as one entry.  Why would this happen?

These are all birth dates, you looking at baptisms?   I believe registration didn’t begin in Scotland until the next year 1854, although I stand to be corrected as I have little experience if Scottish research.

I think you will find that these are baptisms, not birth registrations.

And, like Jebber, I have no knowledge or experience of Scottish records., so I, too, stand to be corrected.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

It's clearly an unofficial register of some sort, like the Dr Williams register in London. It predates civil registration which didn't start till 1855 in Scotland.

The document is Old Parish Registers obtained from Scotland's People, the official Scottish records.  I think that you may be right about these being baptism records.

The title at the top of the page is Register of Births and Baptisms for 1853

Reading Scotlands People's description of these records it seems that some churches kept registers of births.

Going by the title iof the page which you omitted from your original post, it seems that all the children were Baptised at the same time. Something one comes across periodically.

Official Registration of Births/Marriages/Deaths did not become a legal requirement in Scotland until 1855.

Prior to this it was up to the Minister or a Church Official such as the Session Clerk to record these events.

This looks to me as if it could possibly be a Baptism Record for all the children at the one time - saved money doing it this way.
