Who are the parents?

Who are the parents of William Furness Shaw born c. 1855 in Kendal, Westmorland.  On the 1861 and 1871 census returns he is living with his grandparents in Kendal and by 1881 he is married.

His grandparents (Wiliam Furness Shaw -1799 & Dorcas Robinson – c. 1801)  had three daughters Margaret-c.1823, Mary-c.1825 and Betsy-c.1833 and one son Joseph-c.1829   Joseph married in 1849 so could possibly be the father but cannot tie this in.  Joseph and his wife have 3 children in the 1860’s so perhaps Wm. F. Shaw  may be an illegitimate child of one of the daughters of his grandparents and brought up by them.

Margaret looks to have married John Allen in 1844 - on the marriage her father was William and in 1851 she's the right age and they have a daughter called Dorcas which seems to support this.

 Not sure about Mary

Betsy was at home in 1851, married in Q4 1855, so could possible be the mother. If the father wasn't William Wilkinson, the man she married, it would be quite possible young William didn't go to his household

Pity there's no obvious birth registration

Many thanks Mabel.  Looks like it could be an illegitimate birth especially as no obvious birth registration as you pointed out.  Thanks again for your time.

The only William Furness, recorded on Free BMD is a William Furness Hepworth. MMN Furness. Born 1856, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Thank you  Maid of Kent and Sandblown.  Had not thought of the info on the marriage certificate which might reveal the father of the bride and groom.

The record of the marriage is not on FreeBMD but is on Findmypast.
