Gamekeepers Licence
« on: Saturday 01 May 21 20:31 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information relating to William Barrett who was born about 1825 in Hungerford, Berkshire and was a gamekeeper. His last known address was as gamekeeper at Bere House, Bere Court, Pangbourne. Would have been issued a licence at the Quarter Sessions? Any help gratefully received.

There are lots of newspaper mentions of William Barrett, gamekeeper to the Earl of Abingdon.

But I also note that there were several William Barretts who were gamekeepers in Berkshire at the time.

In Abingdon there was one born born circa 1810/11 at Whytham, and his son of the same name  born 1834/5 also at Whytham. These were presumably the ones working for the Earl of Abingdon.

Then there was your man at Bere Court. Can't see any mention of him in newspapers.

Yes, almost certainly. The records are held at the Berkshire Record Office in Reading.

This is the catalogue entry, with a note of the sort of data they contain (which may not help you much, other than providing dates).

My x Grandfather was a Gamekeeper in Gloucestershire -   and his records were found on the Index to the Series of Gamekeeper's Deputations in the Quarter Sessions Order Books - and he appeared to move around various estates.  In 1818, in September he was working for Lady Barbara Ashley Cooper in Hatherop, Eastleach, Martin and Eastleach Turville and in October that year he was working for the Hicks Beach family in Coln St Aldwyn and Quentington.  So they could travel around in a short time frame.

It would be good if people mentioned they were modifying /updating an earlier post. Otherwise mine which appears later, but was posted before the earlier one was modified becomes totally irrelevant

Many thanks for all the help given. William Barrett died between 1862 and 1871. Have not found the death record yet. He was aged 36+. He was alive when his young daughter Martha died. He was born about 1825 in Hungerford. His wifes name was Appleton and she was found in the 1871 census in Welford as a widow.
