James Brown and family
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 19:13 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me trace the family of James Brown?? I've hit a massive steel-reinforced brick wall  :-[

On 22nd January 1898 James Brown married Eliza Dawson in South Shields, Durham in which Jame's father is listed as an Engineer named Robert Brown.

In 1901 Eliza and their 2 children (Henry & Robert) were living at 25 Regent Quay in Aberdeen.

In 1911 the Brown family are back in South Shields where James is listed as a Seaman Fireman.

According to their marriage cert James was born about 1871.
According to the 1911 census James was born about 1875 in Aberdeen.

The address the couple are listed living at on their marriage cert is Eliza Dawson's family home and I haven't been able to work out who the witnesses are in relation to James & Eliza (if they are even related)

Any help on tracing James's family would be muchly appreciated!

I was given this by a member of the Brown family who stated this is the marriage of Henry Brown (son of James and Eliza). Couple of things stand out with this document...

a) Henry is listed as Henry Nelson Dawson Brown - not sure where the Nelson came from? On the GRO index he is listed as Henry Brown Dawson (I'm guessing because he was born illegitimately)

b) James (father) is now listed as Bricklayer

c) can anyone read the address of Henry Brown?

Did they stay on in England? If so, have you been able to find them on the 1939 register (if James is still alive)? It would give you another chance to check his birth date.

The only thing popping out so far in Aberdeenshire is this birth www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYT2-V8M This birth has this James as illigitimate, with father Robert Mutch and mother Margaret Brown in Aberdeenshire in 1871.

I have managed to trace Eliza's death in South Shields in 1922. Without a certain birth date for James I haven't been able to locate a death.

Denmark St looks good! I'll see if I can trace anyone at that address
