Merchant Seaman records on Find My Past won't help in this case. Their databases cover these periods:

Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1835 - 1857
Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1918 - 1941

We need the years in between to be online to check  :-\

From their 1911 entry, see they only had the two sons you mentioned www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWCC-XZF

Did they have any other children that died? If so, wondering whether there were any girls and what their names were.

Added: They show no more children so they only had the two boys.

Monica

Thats correct, just the 2 boys.

Did they stay on in England? If so, have you been able to find them on the 1939 register (if James is still alive)? It would give you another chance to check his birth date.

The only thing popping out so far in Aberdeenshire is this birth www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYT2-V8M This birth has this James as illigitimate, with father Robert Mutch and mother Margaret Brown in Aberdeenshire in 1871.

So I used my last 6 credits to view this record.. this Robert is a Farm Servant  :'(
