Did they stay on in England? If so, have you been able to find them on the 1939 register (if James is still alive)? It would give you another chance to check his birth date.

The only thing popping out so far in Aberdeenshire is this birth www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYT2-V8M This birth has this James as illigitimate, with father Robert Mutch and mother Margaret Brown in Aberdeenshire in 1871.

Hhhmmm..... i wonder if Robert Mutch was an engineer?

;D It has! Hope it has been good for you  :)

I had a quick look at 1939 and nothing obvious for James in Durham/ Northumberland. No family stories as to when he died?

Not finding anything so far on a Robert Mutch, engineer either  :-\

There is a 10 yr old James C Brown, b Aberdeen, boarding in Aberdeen 1881 with a Chalmers family.

That is it within that age range,. Others are with parents or a couple of grandson James born around Aberdeenshire.

James Brown showed as a Mariner at the time of his marriage. Wonder if he could be Merchant Navy? Not good searching for mariner records, but I believe there are records that can be searched on Find My Past? Not sure.

SP do not really hold images for baptism registers after the start of official registration started from 1855 (except RC ones).

Robert Mutch and Margaret Brown certainly looked to be unmarried at the time this James was born looking at how the names have been indexed.

Re merchant seaman records, this is what I was thinking of here www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KC76-MG1 May not be the right James but worth checking maybe?

From their 1911 entry, see they only had the two sons you mentioned www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWCC-XZF

Did they have any other children that died? If so, wondering whether there were any girls and what their names were.

Added: They show no more children so they only had the two boys.
