Mary Stroyan (nee McDowal) of Liverpool (1783-1851)
« on: Monday 03 May 21 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.
I'm desperately trying to find the birth & burial place for my 4th GG Mother Mary. The 1851 census states what looks like "Clutton, Galway" (Ireland) as her birthplace but the 1841 census says that she was born in Scotland. So I'm reading Galway as "Galloway", Scotland and the only Mary I can find who was born abt 1783 was baptised in Dumfries to father Samuel McDowal a merchant. Mary went on to live in Liverpool where she married John Ravenscroft Stroyan (master mariner) in 1806. They had 5 children all baptised at the Scotch church St Andrews in Oldham St. Mary died in Liverpool in 1851 & John died in 1848 but I've been unable to find their burial places.
The other problem is that I cannot identify for sure which Samuel McDowal was Mary's father as there a number SMs born between 1753 & 1763 in Wigtownshire one or two of which went to Liverpool & became merchants / mariners. Any assistance would be appreciated.

It helps us if when quoting census you give us the reference numbers for them.   :)

There is a burial of a Samuel McDowal in May 1827 at Walton on the Hill - abode Wolstenholme Square age 68, he would be old enough to be her father.  :-\
There is mention of a will on Lancat

In 1794 there was a Freight company at Parr Street / Duke Street Liverpool called Samuel McDowal & Co.  The ship was 'Jeanie' and the master John McDowal.

Is this one of their children’s marriages?

Thank you CaroleW & Rosie99 for your replies.
The 1841 & 1851 census refs are HO 107/561/17 & HO 107/2188 or 2189 (not clear) respectively.
I know of Samuels 1827 burial but have just ordered a copy of his Will which may hopefully shed some light on things & I'll look into the 1794 freight company lead. I'm pretty sure that this particular Samuel was a well known slave trader.
My 3rd GG Mother Mary McDowal Stroyan did indeed marry JC Hesse in 1835 at St Philips in Liverpool.
I think that the Ancestry tree you mentioned is probably mine.
Thank you again.

Unsurprising you (and I for a while) couldn't find her, the surname on the image does indeed look like it says "Storyan"
