Color Sgt Linnane Royal Irish Fusiliers
« on: Monday 03 May 21 18:38 BST (UK) »
Hi, i would be grateful for any military information regarding Color Sgt Thomas Linnane who served in India, Egypt, and the Boer war he took part in the siege of Mafeking with the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers when he was mentioned in dispatches.

In 1901 he was stationed at Arbour hill barracks in Dublin when his son was born, it looks as if he was discharged in 1902, as when his wife gave birth to his daughter in 1902 he was listed as a 'watchman' and later birth in 1906 Thomas was stated as an 'army pensioner'.

Thomas died in tragic circumstances in 1910 aged 55.
any further info would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Ancestry shows a Fold 3 record (pay site) for Thomas Linnane abt 1859 Beagh, Galway
Royal Irish Fusiliers no. 1576
There is also a Pension record

Could that be him?

possibly heywood, though 'Linnane' is a common surname in the area around Galway.
not been able to find his marriage cert is a problem, perhaps the couple were married in England before they went to India, maybe a look at the records for date posting of the 1st batt RIF to India might help pin it down, his 2 daughter's were born there (Bengal)in 1894...so i have a ballpark date year to work with.

If those are the right children, he was married in September 1892, somewhere in the "East Indies".

Thanks Shaun.
There is another thread where I asked if the marriage might be in the military record. That’s good that we now have something to go by.  :)

Here is the other thread - I have posted re the children’s births there - reply# 13 and #14

If they are mentioned in the army file then we are on the right track with birthplace ‘Beagh’ possibly.

That place fits with his death in Gort.

Yes they are all correct, there was also a birth in Egypt, Thomas circa 1891.
