death inquest.

I'm a little confused, I have received  what i hope to be my gg grandmothers death cert, the cause of death is written as Coma, rupture of mitra cranial aneurysm, Natural. with pm at the bottom, it also says there was a n inquest held on 15.02.1927. The cert states that her death was 12.02.1927 at St James Hospital, Battersea, i am unsure why, if she  was already in hospital why there would of been an inquest. Thank you for any light that you can shed on this for me.

Maybe to find out why she was in hospital in the first place  :-\

She may have died on arrival in hospital, there is nothing to indicate she had been a patient for any length of time before death.

If you are lucky the Coroner's file will have survived; possibly held at  the London Metropolitan Archives or Surrey archives.

Email them with the basic details; name of deceased, date of inquest and name of coroner and ask if they hold the record.

That is exactly what happened to my dad in 1970.
He had not been seen by a doctor in the 14 days before he died (of a heart attack,age just 46) ,so they held an inquest.

If you fail to get the coroners file,you might be lucky with a newspaper report.

It is unlikely to warrant a press report if the death was through natural causes. Most such inquests go unreported, so don’t be surprised if you have to be content with what is says on the death certificate.

Our local registrar asked if I'd like an inquest on my OH's death.

Apparently if a patient is admitted to hospital with one cause/ailment but then dies in hospital from another cause/ailment then an inquest is held.

My OH, aged 61, was admitted to hospital with a heart attack but died 3 weeks later in hospital from something totally different.  Two doctors signed "exhaustion" on the death cert.
