Yes it does get harder but if you can find his marriage you can order the certificate which should have his fathers name/occupation to progress further.

Witness names can also be helpful.

Do you have him on census with Martha?

If they had children you can look up their birth registrations to find her maiden name then look for their marriage.

Good job the surname is not Smith  ;D

The logical way of confirming that he is the George Catling  that you mention would be to track backwards.  The GRO index would show mothers maiden surname for his children, his marriage would confirm that his father was George.

Beat me to it Milliepede  :)

If you use freebmd to get the children's births then GRO online you will find Martha was nee Brown which helps you find their marriage on freebmd in 1860

The marriage cert is online & shows his father as Charles Catling - labourer

Thanks Millipede and CaroleW

I think i got Georges parents wrong, for some reason i said George and Marianne, maybe it is Charles and Mary .
The 1841 census says Charles and Mary

thanks for the help

I think the cleric at the time made a mistake when recording George's baptism:

George Catlyn b.21/3/1834, bp.27/6/1834 Wymondham, son of 'George' Catlyn and Marianne Farrer.

Charles Catlyn of Wymondham married Mary Anne Farrow 7/8/1831 Banham.

In 1851 Mary states bc.1809 Banham - baptism Mary Farrow b.10/12/1808, bp.19/12/1808 Banham, dau. of Peter and Mary.
