Tubbrid College and Boarding School Drumrush.
« on: Tuesday 04 May 21 11:15 BST (UK) »
In the 1901 Census we have two ancestors residing at the above college.
We are curious as to why they were sent there. What kind of school was it?

Samuel Smith 14 and Joseph Smith 12 from Tullynaskeagh nr Bailieborough Cavan.
Samuel died in WW1 and Joe emigrated to Australia.
Thank you

Here's a link to census record- it's actually the Vaughan Charter School (see 2nd link)-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Drumrush/Tubbrid/1354090/
The pupils are all 'I.C.' (Irish Church which is another name for Church of Ireland). You'll see that the boarders are from a wide range of places-

It wasn't uncommon for children to be sent to boarding schools if they lived in a location that was either remote or had poor schools, father was stationed somewhere else due to his occupation or there was a family connection.
In Fermanagh branch of our family (Methodist) all 5 children (and their 5 cousins) all were boarders at Methodist College in Belfast. Another connection (Church of Ireland) a generation earlier sent to boarding school in Dublin.

History of the school here-

Both Smith boys mentioned in school records-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
