Durham Football Association medal
« on: Tuesday 04 May 21 13:25 BST (UK) »
Hi ,
Hoping there is someone with a bit of football history knowledge out there...

I have a watchchain which belonged to my grandfather William HOWE (bn Shildon 1892-1963), which has a gold medal attached. This medal has the Durham Football Association crest on one side and the reverse reads Benevolent Bowl winners 1921-22

Having done a bit of Googling I found that Crook Town were the winners that year , but do not know who they were playing. Apparently they were criticized for playing "too robustly" in the final , and  the trophy presenter Lt Col Dowling refused to congratulate the team.  2 players then refused to accept their medals and were fined by Durham FA for refusing to shake Lt Col Dowlings hand.

Does anyone know who these 2 players were, or have a list of team member's names for 1921-22?

I have no idea how my ancestor acquired this medal so it is a bit of a mystery.

Thanks.

The final of the Durham Benevolent Cup took place on the 25th March 1922 at Bishop Auckland. The two teams were Crook Town and Stockton.

Thanks.
It is possible the Crook connection (if there is one) is through William's wife's family . She was Margaret E A Thompson, bn 1895 Bp. Auckland,  and they married in 1923. Margaret had family links to Crook and Willington through her mother. Family names were Martin, Campbell, Thompson, Young, Richardson.
