R.A.F. WWII Records
« on: Wednesday 05 May 21 09:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am new to this forum and have a question that is probably easy to solve but I am stumped.
My Father-in-Law was a driver in the R.A.F. during the Second World War.  He passed away in 1976 and we are unable to find any details on line (I use the Findmypast website).
Could you please help in pointing me in the right direction to obtain his service record as we don't even know his service number or what medals he was awarded.  We know he served in India and Iceland but have no dates.
Also, would a member of the armed forces appear on the 1939 Register?
Many thanks

Service records for personnel serving after 1920 are still with the MOD.

To apply see: https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records
There is a fee of £30, you'll need a copy of his death certificate, and there is a long wait (due to Covid)!

The 1939 National Register excluded serving members of the Armed Forces.

As KG has said above you can only get the records from the gov. U.K. site.
We applied for my father's records ( also RAF)  when he was still alive and in his 90's  and it was well worth it. It reminded him of things he'd forgotten . It even had his marks for exams he'd taken! In my opinion it was well worth the wait getting them, though I appreciate we didn't have as long to wait as the current situation.
