BUCHANAN BEATTIE
« on: Wednesday 05 May 21 10:19 BST (UK) »
I have an Ivy or Eveline Galloway who married John Buchanan Beattie in 1903 a commission agent in Great Ayton.  However I cannot find out what happened to them.  John was at the death of Eveline's father in 1906.    In 1911 Eveline was living in Wood Green.Any guidance would be appreciated please

Outward Passenger lists shows:
John Buchanan Beattie 54 yrs, a Merchant departing for India in 1919. Could that be him?

There are several immigration records for Norman Buchanan Beattie which give addresses in Darlington in 1930s.
John Jeffrey Buchanan too.

Administration of effects of Selsey Buchannan Smedley of  Eaglescliffe, Durham who died in Calcutta in 1936 granted to Arthur William Smedley, commercial traveller.

It looks as though the family might have returned to their Durham roots after 1911.  :-\

I checked the London Gazette for "Buchanan Beattie" which returned several mentions re. bankruptcy.
(1909 and 1919)
The Brighton Gazette, 7 Aug 1909, rerers to "J Buchanan Beattie ... a hotel proprietor, formerly of Selsey, and now of Darlington, ..."

Possibility?

John Jeffrey Buchanan too.
Yes Norman appears to have been a mining engineer and spent time at the School of Mines in Camborne in 1936 before going to Accra.  He is listed as living with a Vivian Buchanan Beattie in Piercebridge in 1931. There is a reference to a Vivian Buchanan Beattie in the Cornish Guardian of 1934.  She was fined £1 for aiding and abetting illicit drinking!
John Jeffrey was also a mining engineer in Ghana

Thank you everyone.  I think this man must have led quite a colourful life possibly trying to escape from his responsibilities!  I have found a John B listed in 1939 in Scarborough as a retired hotel manager - DOB 19.3.1870.  He is married to Margaret so either Eveline (Ivy) died or they divorced -assuming it is the same Buchanan Beattie.

He is also listed in the Middlesbrough Daily Gazette in 1909 for bankruptcy.

I think the one in Scarborough is John Baldwin Beattie - see 1911 too.
