Which town in scotland (probably somewhere near edinburgh)
« on: Thursday 06 May 21 00:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I’m hoping someone with far better eyes than me can transcribe this!
Attached is a listing from a marriage in parish records Edinburgh in 1699

The address of the father of the bride, I just cannot read!
It looks as though the groom (gx7 grandfather) is probably Linthigow, where he worked as a Maltman, helping to make the famous whiskey! But the father of the groom, I cannot quite tell which location it says he is from.  It reads to me as Dodeirie? But after much internet searching, I cannot for the life of me find a place that resembles my translation so I’m hoping someone in here with a good eye will be able to tell me if what I think I read is correct?

As always, any help is very much appreciated :)

To me, it looks like Dollerie.  The only Dollerie hits I can find on google are for Creith, Perthshire, though.

Agree with Dollerie (Madderty, Perthshire)...

"ALTERNATIVE NAMES FOR DOLLERIE
Dallorea; Dollarie; Dollary; Dollerie House; Dolore; Dowlary; Dullary; Easter Dollerie"

I also saw Dollerie when I looked late last night and  wondered about Dollar.

Have you checked for a baptism?

James Littlejohn stabler son to James Littlejohn maltman
in Lithgow [test[ ]ing is come thence & Jannet Barclay
daughter to umqll John Barclay smith in Dollerie

maried Thursday
8th Junij

maltman - malt then, especially in this area, would have been used for brewing ale, rather than whisky

Lithgow = Linlithgow

"test[ ]ing" must be a version of "testimonial", i.e. a document from his native parish saying that he was not under church censure etc.

umqll is an abbreviation of umquhile, meaning "late" or "deceased"

Junij = June

There is an entry in the Burgess Roll of Edinburgh:

Littlejohn, James, Burgess, stabler, by act of 21 July          2 Aug. 1699

That ties in with James being from Linlithgow, as, if his father had been a burgess of Edinburgh, he would have become burgess by right of his father. If Jannet's father had been a burgess of Edinburgh, James would have become burgess by her right. There is no John Barclay, smith, in the Burgess Roll. That also suggests that Jannet came from somewhere distant from Edinburgh. Perhaps she had been settled in Edinburgh, maybe working as a servant, for some time, was a member of the congregation and therefore did not need a testimonial from another parish.

Thank you everyone for your replies!
It seems my next steps will be to look up baptisms to confirm the place of the bride, although it is getting quite far back in time now, so if I find nothing, i will accept it.

If I figure out that it is indeed Dollerie, or elsewhere I’ll update here to confirm your deciphering!
