It is also worth looking at the minutes of the kirk session to see if there is any mention there. There might be a note that James gave in a certificate or testimonial when he arrived from Linlithgow. If there were any "scandal" at the wedding (promiscuous dancing or the like) it might be mentioned. Also if the first child were "very premature" there could be something too.

Thanks GR2, that’s interesting, I will have a look through those, this will be my first time looking at Kirk sessions - but you mention first child being “very premature”, well the first child, who is a direct ancestor of my tree was born in early December of that year, making the pregnancy only 5 months long (if occurring during the period of marriage rather than before anyway heh)
