Is it Shippon or Skippen or Skippin or Skipper or Shippen?!
« on: Thursday 06 May 21 11:41 BST (UK) »
Hi folks

This ones been in 'the too hard basket' for about 25 years!

I believe this is my x4 gr grandfather:

James HOWLETT
bp: 01 Sep 1776, Archdeaconry of Sudbury s/of Francis HOWLETT and Mary.

On the 1851 he said he was born at Woolpit, a fair distance from Sudbury.

James married Mary SHIPPEN at Wetheringsett on 04 Apr 1797.

Mary SHIPPON
bp: 06 Feb 1774, Sudbury d/of David SHIPPON and Elizabeth.

On the 1851 she said she was born at Wetheringsett, also a fair distance from Sudbury.

Their children are baptised at Woolpit between 1797 and 1815.

I am stuck with anything further on the SHIPPON / SKIPPEN, etc family.  Could if be the many spellings of the name?!  Also Sudbury, why be baptised so far from home and not just one family?!

Thanks,

bitzar.

EDIT: James' siblings I have found some baptised at Sudbury and some at Woolpit.

I think that you may find that Sudbury is not the place of baptism on the record you found  :).   It is the Archdeaconry that Woolpit comes under

This entry is from the Suffolk baptism index compiled by the Suffolk Family History Society

James Howlett
Baptism 01 Sep 1776
St Mary, Woolpit
Father Francis
Mother Mary

That is the only one I am seeing but it is sourced from LDS records with no film number being given.    Suffolk baptism index covers Sudbury for that year but it is not showing on there, there are no baptisms on there for Wetheringsett.

Wetheringsett is in Hartismere Deanery, which was in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury until 1837.

Many SKIPPEN and SKIPPON baptisms at Wetheringsett cum Brockford have been transcribed by the Suffolk FHS, such as Mary, daughter of David & Elizabeth SKIPPON, in 1774 and her brother Goat SKIPPON in 1770.

Marriages in that parish include David SKIPPON & Martha WEYMAN in 1779 and widower David SKIPPON & Ann FLORA in 1793. I don't see the earlier wedding with a bride named Elizabeth, unless she was Elizabeth FISHER who married David "SHIPPINGS" at Barking (on the other side of Needham Market) in 1759.

Goat SKIPPON of Brockdish, Norfolk, married Susanna MOYSE at Bungay (St Mary) in 1793.

David

Hello and thank you David,

I had noticed the marriage of David to Martha WEYMAN in 1779 in which I think it noted he was single.  I wondered if he may of been a brother to my Mary.  Now 'Goat' is given name I have not come across in my many years.  Thank you for that.

Hmmm, SHIPPINGS phonetically is a possibility.  I have seen so many variations of the surname.

Regards

bitzar.
