Isham, Wham or Vann?
« on: Thursday 06 May 21 13:08 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage here of some of my ancestors but I cant work out exactly what the surname is, to me it could indeed be 'Isham' it doesnt look like 'Vann' at all in my eyes.
One index has it as 'Isham', the transcript of the image has it as 'Wham' and another person has it as 'Vann'?

I cant see a baptism fitting an Isham, apart from one but this Mary has a subsequent marriage record.
There is a baptism of a Mary Vann which could fit but I don't see how this is the same name? Unless it has been wrote 'Vhann'?

This is how 'Vann' is wrote in the same register, also in 1721. This John Vann is given by some trees as the father of this Mary.

This appears different from how Mary's name is spelt, although they are both of Little Glen.

It's written Isham.

The bottom of the I is barely visible, but the letter-form is the same as the J in June below (i and j are generally interchangeable). For the second letter you can just see the loop of the long s below the line.

W can seen in William and Wood and is differently formed.

Thank you for clarifying.

I suppose that's another brick wall for me as there are no Ishams in Leicestershire, in that time period which fit.
