approx date please - Jobling Family of Jarrow
« on: Friday 07 May 21 21:17 BST (UK) »
This family photo was  put behind glass in a folding tray donkeys years ago and is now so firmly rooted in 'family tradition' that its (apparently) unthinkable to try to remove it for scanning - which is a shame as I think that scanned it would be much clearer, but hey ho, tradition is important too.

We  believe it was taken c 1900 but if anyone can give me a better idea based on what they are wearing I'd appreciate it.

thanks

Boo

I would say by the size of the men's collars, 1907-1911

Thanks Carol

I was hoping it may be earlier but have no idea about fashion (historical or current!) so bow to your knowledge.

In 1911 the census shows this couple had 16 children in the 30 years they had been married (though the 30 years is slightly 'out' as they married in 1878) - 10 of whom had died by 1911 :-(
Even with the MMN on the GRO index I still have 3 to identify and was hoping a date might help to narrow down the wee one between his Mum and Dad in the photo.

Back to the spreadsheet of the large list of Jobling births in South Shields District to see if I can discount some more of them and narrow down the list, though I suspect that these 3 may have been still births, until I run out of options I'll keep looking :-)

Looking more closely at the men's collars, I think it could be early 1890s going by the sleeves on the lady's dress.

Oh how kind of you ! Thank you japeflakes, that's very much appreciated :-)

(errm, do you have some special x ray vision setting that will let you see if there's a date on the back? <g>)

I'm not all that good at men's fashions but a couple of my ref books suggest that the collars were 'in' through  1900-1905 with a fade out through to 1910  :-\

The ladies' dress styles suggest early 1900s.

Thanks Gadget, though I know its difficult and not an exact science it does seem to fit with what we thought.

Looking through the records we have, our 'guesstimate' of c1900 must have been based on the following:

Standing at the back, far right was Robert Clement Jobling born 1881, married  1905 and died in 1909

The girl on the photo, Susannah Bell Jobling, born 1878,  married 1900 and emigrated to Canada in 1904. Still unsure when she died.

thanks for the help
