Willard atte Doune
« on: Saturday 08 May 21 04:41 BST (UK) »
Kia ora

I have a list of people from a 1322 petition of the community of the Lowy of Pevensey, members of the Kings port of Hastings, addressed to the King and Council.  One of the people on this is John Willard atte Doune.  I assume that Doune was a place and have tried finding it or something similar in that area.  (It is definitely not the Scottish castle)  Any help appreciated.

I assume that Doune was a place and have tried finding it or something similar in that area.

Mediaeval names using the form atte [something] normally derive from a feature of the location rather than a formal place name.

A quick search of one AALT index page came up with hundreds of names;  such as:

atte Water, atte Stone, atte Gate, atte Lake, atte Mill, atte Mershe, atte Bregge, atte Fenne, atte Forde

A reference to a person using the formal place name would normally take this form:  John Willard de Pevensey.

You may find a reference to your man on the AALT site.  Start with the WAALT search here:

ADDED:

I should have included that atte Doune probably means he lived on or near a hill (down).

I have also seen references to John Willard of la Doune and this document makes reference to la Doune as a tenement
