The History of the Parish of Hailsham has under the heading, the letters in the subject line, I assumed they must be roman numerals, although some of them I had never seen before but I doubt that now.  However I can't find out what they mean.

Looking at the PDF of the book "History of the Parish of Hailsham", there is a roman numeral date MDCCCXXXIX that is being misread from PDF to text as mncecxxxrx.

See below a clip from the PDF versus a copy/paste from PDF into the reply box.

'On the south wall of the chancel, a White marble tablet,
with inscription in “ Gothic ” lettering and coat of arms,
a chevron between three fi sh-weels :
The Family of Willard,
for a long period Lords of the Manor
of Ersham
, were resident in’ this Parish in the reign of King
Edward III A .D . 134 1 when William Wyllard and John Wyllard
contributed towards the Nonac Tax. Amongst many
subsequent members of the Family buried here were Christopher
Willard who died about 1500
, RobertWillard 1528
, NicholasWillard

Hi,

Were these in lower case?

So for example, MCMXXXIX is 1939.

M for 1000
CM for 1000 less 100 ... ie 900
XXX for three  lots of 10,  ie 30
IX for ten less one ie 9

RED POST.... well sorted M. :)

1839 = MDCCCXXXIX

Many thanks for your responses, I understand that now.  However I have no idea what all of this means:
Kendall - WRY
Milner - WRY
Appleyard - WRY

Please enlighten me?

WRY = West Riding of Yorkshire - where my Kendall, Appleyard and Milner ancestors lived, plus Archbell, also WRY but some of them ventured further afield.  :)
