Pension record and death certificate / inquest advice please
« on: Saturday 08 May 21 16:49 BST (UK) »
Hi I’m not looking for a look up on the soldier .
I’m after advice about procedure and process which I’ve found in relation to one of my ancestors.
When my ancestor died in 1950 age 59, his death certificate says he was an WW1 Army Disability pensioner and the informant on the cert says it was the local coroner following an inquest   He served in WW1 army and was awarded a disability pension and I have his service record and his pension record. The pension record states it was paid for life. The death certificate says at the top it was issued for the purposes of widows pension.
My question is , as the war pension record said it was paid for life, does that mean his widow didn’t get anything after his death? It was the heading at the top of the cert saying issued for purposes of widows pension that has thrown me.
I had a look online for the answers to my question inc Nat Archives, the Long long trail, the genealogy subscription sites but haven’t seen anything that might answer my question so wondered if anyone in here had come across it before.
Thanks

I cannot remember where, but in 1950 there would be a charge for a copy death certificate, waived if it was needed for claiming a state widows pension, seemingly the authorities would not accept a copy, mind photocopiers had not been invented then, so there was no alternative but to get one from the registrar.

There is this 472 page book, published 1918, on War Pensions and Allowances (I've used it once or twice for ancestors' war pension research - not an easy read!), but it might provide some useful information:
