Passenger arrival in NZ Eliza WITTISON
« on: Sunday 09 May 21 03:11 BST (UK) »
Grateful if some kind person is able to find the arrival details in New Zealand of Eliza aka Liza aka Liza Thelma WITTISON.
She was born on 12 June 1882 in Kingston, Tasmania, Australia to Samuel WITTISON and his wife Gertrude Ellen Wittison nee Johnson.
I have first found her in NZ when she married as Liza Thelma WITTISON to Albert James Rawstron on 11 March 1909 in Napier.
I am not looking for any other information on her at this time.
I have checked Ancestry, Ancestry Family Trees, Findmypast and FamilySearch and not been able to find anything, unless I have missed it?
I have also checked the Tasmania Library records.
Any assistance appreciated.
TPB

Hi

Have you looked at passenger lists out of Tasmania at all ?

It may be that she doesn't appear on lists into New Zealand because strictly, she would not  be classified as an immigrant.   Persons residing in Australia and New Zealand in that era, were "free" to travel the short "hop across the Tasman" in both directions, without the need to be processed through a formal-type immigration system.

Sometimes the passenger lists for these trips were incomplete and mostly they only recorded very basic information about passengers (often ages were not included).

Still worth checking for, though ... you never know what will turn up !

Hi TPB,

I can't see any candidates on the NZSG database Passenger Lists - Victoria, Australia Outwards to New Zealand 1852-1923.

The Intention to Marry Notice for her 1909 marriage might help, perhaps.

Would you like me to get it?

Hi TPB,

I visited Archives New Zealand earlier today and checked the 1909 ITM Register.

No entry for them at Napier, sorry. This means that they must have completed an Intention to Marry Notice elsewhere, which could be anywhere.

Did either of them have a connection to a particular part of the country that they might have decided to visit?

Many thanks Spades for checking the ITM Notices.
Did you check for the month as noted above or the whole year?
I will do a bit more research to see if I can find them anywhere else around 1909?
Thanks again
TPB

The Registers are divided into quarters of the year and the parties completed a Notice about a week before the marriage or on the day in later decades.

This is why I need the year and place of marriage so there's a place to start looking.

I checked the whole quarter, January to end of March, for Napier.

Many thanks Spades - this information is helpful.
If it is not too much trouble would you be able to check the ITM for Napier for July.
I had another look at Albert's WW1 military record on Archway and there is another date of marriage recorded (faintly) as "12 July 1909?", Napier - they were married by the Registrar.

Hi TPB

Always a good idea to pre-check dates (if possible) with the NZ BDM (online) indexes before making a look-up request.   :)

Yes, the Liza Thelma WITTISON - Albert James RAWSTRON marriage date was "12 July 1909".

^   Above topic will assist with how to go about obtaining exact dates in  B D & M indexes   :)
