Orchardly
« on: Sunday 09 May 21 11:20 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage license between a James Ayres and Diana Hopkins to be married at Orchardly. It's dated 1759.
Does anyone have some idea where Orchardly is? Please?

Kind regards, Keith

I thought James Ayres sounded familiar.

Thanks all for that....

Looks like the Orchardleigh records are available on Ancestry, but you nee to go to the Card Catalogue to get at them, and chunks (including the time I'm after) are missing both from Ancestry and the South West Heritage Trust.

Best, Keith

Here is the Genuki page on Orchardleigh:

What records are you looking for exactly?

The name of Ayres, plus variants, seems to be quite common in the Frome area at that time.

It certainly seems to be common. James Ayres is from Frome, but his marriage licence says he intends to marry Diana Hopkins in Orchardleigh in 1759.
The marriages between 1755 and 1765 are missing, from the Somerset Archives, from Ancestry and from the Familysearch Cattle Dog. There are baptisms at Frome St John
for 5 children of James Ayres and Diana, so I think that we can assume that they married.

There are some sites on Frome family history such as:

https://www.fromefamilyhistorygroup.co.uk/

http://www.fromeresearch.org.uk/

The Frome Research one has details of Orchardleigh Leases and I note there are some Ayres names in this. Click on Property and then on Orchardleigh Leases. Scroll down to get the Ayres names. James Ayres is shown in these.

You could also try The Somerset and Dorset Family History Society: https://sdfhs.org/
