Is this somewhere in India 1886-1890 Ralph Harwood
« on: Sunday 09 May 21 14:52 BST (UK) »
UPDATE: Having done some research into the regiment, apparently they served in the third Burmese war 1885 and the Second Boer War 1899-1902, so it's feasible I suppose that he was in Africa, after he went to India. I know he was in India for some time at least because it says that clearly.

I'm trying to understand a military record for a Ralph Harwood ( I have various threads on this which I can point you to if needed), which is unfortunately quite battered.

I do know that he was part of the Liverpool Regiment and that went to India in 1886.

He has a lengthy medical record which has entries from 1887 to 1892. Unfortunately it's quite battered and I can't make sense of the places. At least I think they are places.

I have no idea how long he was in India for, so these could be for somewhere else. However some of the entries the '90s say 'climate' as a reason for the illness so I would assume that was not referring to England.

I have to upload these images in two separate posts as apparently they are too big.

I agree. FIBIS is always a good place to research the British in India. This is their info on Naini Tal.

The service number for the Ralph Harwood re-enlisting in 1885 was 1345. (And yes, that is one battered file!)

From the Anglo-Boer War Records 1899--1902 there is this:
First name(s)   R
Last name   Harwood
Service number   1345
Rank   Private
Regiment   1 Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Year   1899-1902
Biography   -
Event detail   Accidentally Wounded - Died on 30/09/1900 at Machadodorp
Event unit   1 Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment)

So at some point in 1900 it does appear that he went from India to South Africa.

Thank you so much everyone for your help. I think Naini Tal does look like a good fit.

Knowing what battalion he was in has enabled me to look a bit more into the troop movements which he may have been part of.

Thank you very much.
