A Williams mystery
« on: Sunday 09 May 21 19:25 BST (UK) »
Eliza Ann Williams daughter of George and Amelia Williams, born 1846 in Olveston Gloucestershire.  In 1868 she marries William Lloyd in Bristol.  By 1893 they have had 10 children:
Thomas William b 1869 Burnham
Rose b 1871 Highbridge
George Arthur b 1873 Bristol
Eliza Holbrook b 1874 Newport
Ellen b 1878 Newport
Emily Jane b 1881 Bristol
Sarah b 1885 Bristol
Alice b 1886 Bristol
Frederick Henry b 1888 Bristol
Louisa b 1893 Bristol

Now the mystery

The children are all living with the parents in the census, but according to the GRO site the mother's surname is Hancock not Williams.  How?

Marriage
Sep 1868
Lloyd William Bristol 6a 72
Williams Eliza Ann  Bristol 6a 72

There is a marriage in 1881 between a William Lloyd and Mary Ann Hancock in Swansea, but the first child Thomas was born in 1869.

Have been trying to work this problem out with little success, would love to know why?

Eliza Ann Williams daughter of George and Amelia Williams, born 1846 in Olveston Gloucestershire.

What was her mother's maiden name in case that's where the Hancock comes in?

If I have the right census Amelia is 64 in 1851 so can't be the mother of Eliza - maybe a different family  :-\

GRO index, birth
Eliza Hancock    -
December 1/4 1846 registration district Shipston on Stour vol 11 page 404. No mother's maiden name recorded.

Added :- I wonder if this one is the daughter of Selina Hancock and only has her mother on her baptism record. Selina marries William Sanders and is with him and Eliza on the 1851 census in Shipston On Stour. Eliza has the surname Sanders.

Yes, that seems to be the first mistake.  George and Amelia's daughter was just Eliza, not Eliza Ann.  She married in 1869 to Samuel Sebastian LUSTY, father George is a butcher.

Dundee, You have solved the mystery and what's more one of her siblings married a Lusty, also George was a butcher.  I did come across the Hodge connection but father was called John not George Williams.

Thank you for your assistance.

When you say Dundee has solved the mystery - what is it please?
I thought, as I posted, that you had the wrong spouses married to each other from the indexes  ???
What is the Hodge connection - other than that marriage?

Have you found a Lloyd/Hancock marriage?
