Shamrock Lodging house exact address
« on: Sunday 09 May 21 19:30 BST (UK) »
Hi im hoping someone might have a business register that could tell me what address would the 'Shamrock Lodging House' on Gardiner Street would have been during the 1940s/50s?

The problem stem's from the fact that Gardiner street been one of the longest streets in Dublin had/has a mixture of social, private, and business houses, and it has the Lower/Middle/Upper addresses.

I do know that a lady called Francis Walsh was most likely the manager and possibly owner of the 'Shamrock Lodging house' building/business during the 1940s/50s.

As usual any help will be very much appreciated.

Not finding any reference to it in newspapers.
The most likely location would have been in Lower Gardiner Street, which even today has many accommodation places, or the bottom part of Middle Gardiner Street.

The libraries are back open from 1pm today in Dublin, so a nice email to the kind folk upstairs in Pearse Street library might get your answer. They have a huge selection of Thom's directories there.

Grizzly

There are no entries for a Shamrock Lodging House in Thoms  Directory for the years 1929,1934,1942,1945,1948,1951,1952,1958 or 1962 in each  Index

Have you given the correct spelling for "Francis" ?   There are entries for a  Francis Walsh in 1934 who was resident at 16 Claud Road Drumcondra and in 1952 at 2 Charleston Avenue,Rathmines.

There is a newspaper snippet - 27th October 1920
Ex Soldier Arrest
Taken from Lodging House in Lower Gloucester St ... the Shamrock registered lodging ‘boon’  8, Lower Gloucester Street

I can’t read it all as I have no access

There are two other snippets 20th  July 1929 re an incident re a man charged with vagrancy and resisting arrest - address Shamrock Lodging House, Dublin.

There was a Shamrock lodging house in Capel Street in War of Independence/Civil War times.

There is also mention of one in Monto, though I don't think much 'lodging' would have been done there. (Read 'by the hour' establishment).

The Gloucester Street 'boon' is a misread by the OCR of 'house'.

The articles re vagrancy have a man on arrest claiming his name is 'John Byrne' of 'Shamrock Lodging House'.

Yes I have that but just didn’t post his name.
The other article gives the full address though which might help.

From reading the articles, I don't think it was his real name.

There is a person called Walsh connected with a building which also contains 'Shamrock Oil' in Lower Gardiner Street in the 40s, which may be a coincidence.

Do you mean Walsh wasn’t the real name?

The articles are too early for the Walsh connection as outlined by grizzly.

I was hoping that someone might be able to now check 8 Lower Gardiner Street in those later years,  if there are directories.
