Accessing English court records from 1971
« on: Monday 10 May 21 12:27 BST (UK) »

I have no idea about accessing court records but I thought there are so many Rootschatters out there with specialised knowledge!

Basically, I'm interested in a court case at Oxford Crown Court which lead to a conviction on  25th January 1971.
I don't have a clue where to begin or even what kind of records might exist.

It was a case that is significant to my family so would be very interested to see any records there may be.

Thanks, KGarrad.
I think I might have to consult local newspapers at the time to get more background before preceding with court records.

Unless the trial was for murder, treason or another very serious offence, the court records are unlikely to survive at this date. Those that do are surname-indexed in TNA Discovery.

Enter the surname, with the year-range 1970-1971, and the reference ASSI 6. You could add Oxford as a search term, if you need to narrow the results.

In any case you will probably get far more information out of the newspapers than from any surviving court records. For this date you’ll probably need to have the papers searched at the Oxfordshire History Centre – perhaps start with the Oxford Mail ?

Thanks!
I think my Mum will contact the Oxfordshire History Centre. Luckily, she lives in Oxfordshire  :-)
