RNR service record 1860 (BT164/1/238)
« on: Monday 10 May 21 13:02 BST (UK) »
This record refers to Duncan Cameron b.1838 Tyree and the two voyages on Great Eastern (ON21891) and Belle (ON20766).
The CL&A for 1860 for the Great Eastern has Cameron listed at Line 139 :-
P.S. Ulysses (of Jersey)  Ord.Seam  15.6.1860 - 2.7.1860  New York (Deserted).

There was no CL&A for journey @ 8/1860 for Belle.

BT164/1/238 shows engagement 12.6.1860 for Great Eastern to New York expected return in Sep'r. Col.42 shows discharge 2.7.1860 and over 43 - 46 what appears to be "Rem at New York".
Next line shows:-
Engaged 6.8.1860 AB // Belle 20766 > Harbour Grace return Fe '61 // --then under Discharge Col's 41-46 // Liverpool / 15.7.? / AB / Deserted /  ? Harbour 25.9.1860.

The document is available to view/download for free on TNA.
Can anyone 1. interpret the final remarks in quotes for the Great Eastern,
and 2. suggest how to interpret the entry for Belle ?

Regarding the Belle, (a brig, of Liverpool) the dates are confusing but it appears that he was engaged in August 1860 for a voyage to Harbour Grace (Newfoundland), expected to return in February 1861, but he deserted at Surry Harbor (Maine) in September 1860.

The Belle was wrecked a year later near Barbados, with the loss of 5 crew.

ShaunJ,
I do believe you have cracked it on both queries.
I was beginning to get the logic of the Belle entry but couldn't see "Surry" - probably because I had never heard of it - but you have cracked it.
Many thanks for solving the puzzle.
