Am not sure if this would be our man, a Thomas Hobbs was convicted at Central Criminal Court in England and sentenced to life imprisonment, for Highway Robbery, sent to Australia on board the "Lady Kennaway" on the 2nd October 1836.

This man was aged 19 and single.

I see that some family trees have Thomas arriving on the Augusta Jessie in 1837 which you can see here.  Only heads of families are listed in a disposal list.

The emigrants consist of forty-seven families, containing in all 250 persons, selected from the coast of Sussex in England; and to judge by their appearance they will be found a benefit to the colony. The whole of them, we believe, are farm servants. They will be lodged on coming ashore in the new buildings behind the Government House, which have been finished and are ready for their reception.

Debra,
Thanks so much for this, now got proper closure on how our family came to Australia.  It appears that must be him, as the records show him having 2 persons with him (children), most likely his wife and one child that he had at that time.  Age 30 is not quite right, he was born 1813, but maybe his age was put up for whatever reason.   But certainly his death certificate, number of years in Australia, coincides with him arriving 1837.
Regards
Jan

Excellent find, Debra.

Adding this so as to "tidy up" the info re the Thomas HOBBS arriving on the Lady Kennaway.

Looking at this record:
New South Wales, Australia Convict Ship Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1836, Lady Kennaway

The Thomas HOBBS shown on this list was convicted at the Central Criminal Court on 17 August 1835, (and sentenced to transportation for life).

This looks to be the same chap:
UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849 for Thomas Hobbs, Ganymede
Received from Newgate Gaol, 18 November, 1835
Thomas Hobbs, age 19, convicted of robbery at Central Criminal Court Old Bailey, 17 August 1835, transported (sentence: for life) to NSW 25 May 1836.

The record shown on the Old Bailey proceedings seem to show that Thomas HOBBs lived around Bethnal Green and that his father visited him while he was in custody.

By the way was Sarah baptised at St Mary's Guildford?

Judith, thanks for all of that information too, great that you had access to that too to complete the request, albeit it though that we originally had the wrong information for our Thomas Hobbs.
Regarding Sarah Ann Hobbs, are you suggesting that the place of birth should be East Guldeford, not East Guildford?   I can see now, having looked at a map of the area, there could possibly have been a mistake made by other Ancestry members.

I didn't even know that there was a village of that name, but East Guldeford in Sussex would seem more sensible to me than East Guildford in Surrey.

The church at East Guldeford is definitely "St Mary's" but at a quick glance I'm seeing neither the marriage nor the birth of Sarah Ann but the on-line coverage of records for that parish doesn't seem to be very comprehensive.  Will have a better look tomorrow.

The births of Harriet and Thomas were in Sussex and, according to the information found by Debra it would seem they departed for Australia from Sussex.  There is a St Mary's church in Guildford but it doesn't seem to be in East Guildford.

TROVE has some further snippets re the arrival of the Augusta Jessie.  There are others, if you want to search but not much more information.

She left Portsmouth on the  15th June, 1837, arriving 11 October

The Government Gazette gives notice re hiring immigrants from the Augusta Jessie, with a list of the trades on offer.

Judy,
Thank you, that's great to see, am wondering if you have any access to information from Kent in regard to Mary Hobbs first husband George Coker/Cuckow who died not long after their marriage.
George and his Father Thomas Cuckow (Coker) were convicted and sentenced to death for stealing at Kent Court and they were transported to Sydney on board the "Mermaid" for life in Australia.
George Cuckow (Coker) was born 1809 and died in 1846 and his Father Thomas Cuckow was born 1766, died 1843 Cobbitty.   George was assigned for work, but his Father was not assignable.

If you can give me more information on that too, would really appreciate that.
