Norfolk Island Births and immigration
« on: Tuesday 11 May 21 06:06 BST (UK) »
I have a George Alexander Milward thought to have been born on Norfolk Island in 1830 and died 29 Sep 1878 in Geelong, Victoria. Don't know his parents name but father maybe also be a George and mother Jane. The 1830's was the era in which Norfolk Island was a penal colony. I'm trying to establish was George A Milward's parents, convicts, free settlers or part of the island administration. And also when/how did George arrive in Victoria. All help is appreciated.

. Dated 1832 from "Depraved and Disorderly" National Academic Digital
"George Milward, a sergeant in the 39th Regiment, separated
from his wife, 'who is now an abandoned prostitute on the streets of
Sydney'. He applied for his two boys to be admitted, but the authorities
were not convinced, querying his application, and the 'grounds he
applies to have these boys admitted' (to orphan school)
Not sure if this is the father of your George?

The reply from Shume is vert interesting. I haven't yet established if my George born 1830 had any other brothers. Will keep looking.

The orphan admission applications are viewable on Ancestry. On James and George’s application, it also mentions a girl, aged 11.
The father served with 39th Regiment of Foot for 19 years.
