From Ancestry.com.au this is a starting point.
Name:   George Alexander Milward
Gender:   Male
Baptism Age:   0
Birth Date:   12 Apr 1830
Baptism Date:   1 Feb 1831
Baptism Place:   St. Philips Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Residence Date:   1830
Residence Place:   New South Wales, Australia
Father:   George Milward
Mother:   Jane
FHL Film Number:   993950
shume   australia

May I mention that the info from Ancestry is based on their interpretation of an index attributed to familysearch  (FHL 993950) but there 's NO mention that St Philips, Sydney had a particular responsibilty dating from 1810 and not relieved until the 1856 establishment of civil registration.

So in 1810 the newly appointed NSW Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, set up the admin system that ordered hat all baptism and burials within the territories under his governorship (an extensive geographical area including  South Sea Islands, NZ, NI, VDL, etc) and the requirement covered all clergy, not just CofE.  So St Philips CofE parish registers includes baptisms from all over the Antipodes, not just CofE Sydney.  Those transmitted baptism  records do NOT give any surname to the person being baptised.   So somewhere on 12 April 1830 a baby was born.  That baby was baptised somewhere in the then territory of NSW 1 Feb 1831 and the clergyman then transmitted that information to the NSW Chaplains at St Philips.

JM.

George Milward may well have been born 1830 TAS if the regiment was there at this time.. there is a big time gap between his birth supposedly 1830 and his baptism in Sydney. Can't find anything on Tas archives to support this though. I have the TAS Pioneers Index 1803-1899 and no relevant Mil(l)ward listed either

Further information regarding James Milward (George’s brother) who returned to England.
I don’t know when he returned to England. He is not in the 1841 census with his father and step-mother.

1st marriage 11 May 1848
St Mary’s, Oldham Lancashire
James Milward to Hannah HOBSON (single daughter of Thomas Hobson)

2nd Marriage 31 July 1859
St John & ST Matthew Chadderton, Lancashire
James Milward (widower) to Sarah BUTTERWORTH

1851 Census St George Manchester
•   James Milward head, 25 married, tin plate worker, born NI
•   Hannah Milward wife married, 23, born Plymouth
•   George H Milward son 1 born Manchester
•   Hobson Milward 10 ?months born Manchester
•   Thomas Milward 5 days? born Manchester

1861 Census
•   James Milward head, 35 married, tin plate worker, born Ireland
•   Sarah Milward wife 39born Lancashire
•   George Henry Hobson Milward 11
•   Thomas Milward 10
•   Jane S Milward 8
•   Hannah Milward 6
•   Mary Milward 4
•   Elizabeth Milward 2
•   Jeffrey Milward 11 months

In the 1871 Census, Manchester
Wife Sarah claims to be widow with children Hannah, Mary, Elizabeth & Jeffrey.

However, I think James returned to Australia, because there is this death registration.
MILWARD  JAMES 10095/1906     PARRAMATTA
parents: GEORGE S       JANE

And added: James’ daughter Hannah marries in  NSW in 1882 to Professor DUNLOP

Agree totally - I have also tried under Mil(l)wood and similar variations.    I can find a transcription of the baptism -  I share :
1 Feb 1831 baptism registered by Rev William Cowper in St Philips C of E register, Sydney.

George Alexander born 12 April 1830, son of Sergeant George Milward of 39th Regiment and his wife Jane.

And Neale found

So I wondered where else were the 39th  - so baby may have been born at sea or at HQ or Jane may have delivered in England and then come later after her confinement.... or any number of variations....  Here's a link that may be useful...

“In consequence of the breaking-up of the reserve or dιpτt companies of the regiment in the beginning of 1828, the officers and men composing those companies proceeded by detachments to the head-quarters in New South Wales, leaving a dιpτt company in England, on the 24th August 1830, of two captains, two lieutenants, one ensign, five serjeants, six corporals, four drummers, and thirteen privates.  The first detachment embarked for New South Wales on the 1st of February 1828, and the last sailed on the 30th of August 1830.
During the period the regiment was employed in New South Wales, detachments were stationed at Van Diemen's Land, at King George's Sound, and on the northern coast, which were distant six hundred, fifteen hundred, and two thousand miles from the head-quarters.
