Help Please Tracing Medal Cards
« on: Tuesday 11 May 21 17:41 BST (UK) »
17501 John  Waterhouse of the Royal Scots in France 8/01/1916 to 16/07/16 then transferred to the RAF
 as  106049 till 1919

Found this RAF Record referring to Medals but can't find any Medal cards under either number or any other records.

Any advice or help appreciated.

I've looked at the medal roll for The Royal Scots & 17501-05 are missing.
This leads me think that these men were transferred to another Regt.
Where has the R.Scots info come from?

It appears on his Fold3 Disability Pension Card.

It is thought that Range of numbers allocated to the 15th Battalion

15th. Btn. sounds right as others from that batch are either 15th. or 17th.
Looked at RFC/RAF rolls & he's not there either.
17497 R.Scots appears on page 795 of their roll so 17501 should be on the
same page.
On his pension ledger it states his medals are on page 149 so it's not the R.Scots roll.
The ledger also says his 2nd. stint overseas was from 29/8/17 - 3/3/18.
March 1918 was the date the RFC became the RAF so it may be his 2nd. tour was with the RFC
or he joined the RAF after it's formation.
According to TNA there are no rolls for men joining the RAF after it's formation.

Article in the "Daily Mail" dated 18th July, 1916, has a list of names under the heading, "More Wounded Arrive." The list of names, "belonging to Scottish regiments" includes, Royal Scots, Pte. John Waterhouse (17501). Can't access the whole article but I believe this refers to a hospital/ambulance train arriving at Glasgow. Date fits with the end of his first period of service in France.
     Regards,     Dod.

The Daily Record, 18 July 1916 :-

'More wounded Arrive'
Two hospital trains arrived in Glasgow yesterday, one carrying 120 wounded for Cambuslang Hospital and the other close on 200 for Stobhill Hospital. There were few stretcher cases and the majority of the wounds were on the head and arms. Those belonging to Scottish Regiments were:-

Royal Scots - Pte. John Waterhouse (17501)
