Street name
« on: Wednesday 12 May 21 03:23 BST (UK) »

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me decipher the name of a street where my relative was living  in the 1860 census for Holstein, which was at that time part of Denmark.  From what I can see the language used on the census was actually German and the handwriting unfortunately for me is in the German style. I seem to have no problem reading Norwegian and Polish records but German is always a challenge.  What I am looking at is near the top of the page (the 5th line down near the left) following Name der Strasse...then the handwritten portion of that line.  My guess is Neustadt ?? I looked at some of the streets in the town thinking this might be a candidate, but of course it looks nothing like the modern lettering.  Do you agree or perhaps I've missed it all together and it's something else.  I appreciate any suggestions.

Looks like I need a visit to Specsavers as I don't see 'der Strasse'?

Which column is it in?

Is it possible to underline it please, to make it more obvious to others?

It does look like Neustadt.

(Neustadt it is the handwritten part about 2 down in response to 'der Strasse .....' and der Strasse is is printed and uses old German printing.) older Double S (eszett) and complicated German capital S ( ß)

The (printed) bit actually says:

Name der Straße oder des Dorfes

(Name of the street or the village)

I am also tempted to go for Neustadt, even though the first letter is nothing like the capital "N" at the beginning of Carl's surname in the list. That is a lovely swirly "N".  :)

But I can't see what else it could be. I wondered about an "H", but the others in the clip are very different.

If it is indeed Neustadt in Holstein, I can recommend a visit! Very pretty little place. We went there a few years ago when my parents were over here visiting us.
What sticks in my memory is that we were standing on the quayside, looking at the boats (I come from a sailing family) and the water was absolutely full of jellyfish. I then took a photo of the family and as I pressed the shutter button, Ali (our beautiful woofer) cocked his leg on a wonderful display of flowers in a wooden planter. A bit embarassing, but the photo always makes us laugh.  ;D
Sorry to digress.  ::)

Best regards,

Aaaarrggghhhh!  >:(

Well done, Dave!

I was so busy looking at the Neustadt bit that I didn't even see that it says Stadt Tönning at the top!

Oh, my giddy aunt...  ::)

Sometimes I should take a better look at the whole picture.  :P

But Neustadt (the town) is nevertheless worth a visit! As is Tönning. In fact, Tönning is maybe even prettier than Neustadt.  :)
