Trying to find the Dobsons
« on: Wednesday 12 May 21 07:50 BST (UK) »
My deceased husband John always thought his father Albert b.1901 Salford just had 3 brothers.Walter b.1891 Warrington,Harry b.1895 Warrington,George Barnham b.Openshaw 1898.

At some time between 1891 & 1898 the Dobsons moved to Manchester & then to Salford.
The parents were John Dobson b.3.2.1867 Warrington & Elizabeth Senior b.4.8.1868 Woolwich. They married 19.6.1886 St Elphins Parish Church,Warrington.
Looking at the 1911c it states that only 5 of 12 children survived which was a huge surprise to my husband.I have tried to find the others & now have a list of when they were born.
Some died at birth or soon after but I cannot find some dates of death.
I have the following : Elizabeth Amelia b Warrington 1886 d.1887,Arthur b.1888 Warrington d.?
Emily b.1889 Warrington d.1894.Walter b.Warrington 1891-d.o.d not known,Harry b.1895 Warrington d.od.NK,Robert b.Salford?1896 d.? George Barnham b.1898 Openshaw 1898 d.od.NK.
David S.b.Salford 1899 d.od ? Jessie b.Salford 1900 d.od.? Albert b.Salford 1901 d.1929(my husbands father) Lilly b.Salford 1909 d.o.d.? & Annie Elizabeth b&d at birth Salford.

As previously mentioned only 5 survived up to 1911c Walter,Harry,George,Albert & Lilly.
Lily must have died sometime between the 1911c & the year 1927 when my husband was born as he never knew that he had an Aunt on his Dads side. The 3 older brothers lived in the Greengate area of Manchester when my husband used to visit them as a boy. We also met up with some of Walters grandchildren at some point.I am trying to find out more about the dates of death of the other children who didn't survive.
Any info appreciated.

So far I can only confirm 10 of the births

Dobson births mmn Senior
Warrington
1887 Elizabeth died 1887 Warrington       not Elizabeth Amelia
1888 Arthur died 1888 Warrington
1889 Emily died 1894 Warrington
1891 Walter
1893 George baptised as George Barnham
1895 Harry
Salford
1901 Albert
1905 Violet born end of 1904, possible death 1906 Barton upon Irwell
1907 Arthur died 1908 Salford
1909 Lily

The others listed Robert, David S, Jessie and Annie Elizabeth are not their children.
I will keep looking.

There is also
George Dobson
1898 Chorlton mmn Senior which matches George b 1898 in 1911 so George 1893 must have died
Found
George Dobson died 1893 Warrington age 0
one more to find
ADDED
baptism 1898 as George Barnum Dobson, transcription only

Yes, I found George Barnum  Dobson b.1898 Openshaw was baptised as were Arthur,Harry, Emily & Walter all at St Elphins Church Warrington where their parents were married.
Details found on the Lancashire Online Parish Clerk  site.It also states in George Barnum Dobsons details that by then the family are living at 21 Weaver St Openshaw. In the case of the other children they are living in Tilley St Warrington (varying numbers ) when they are baptised.Correction -When Arthur was baptised the address is 16 Platt St.Warrington.

Your information is much appreciated

I wonder if lily could have moved away and married not stayed in touch with family rather than died .

I did find a marriage to an Arthur bridge in Warrington but 1922 would be too young

Could she have emigrated.

Looking at the big age gap between your father in law and his siblings is it possible that  lily was actually his birth mother and had to leave her son with her parents and not return .

Just speculating ..on possibilities outside the box

I always look at posts about DOBSONS  it's my cousin's surname and his family were very difficult to follow .

Brigidmac - I think you have the generations mixed up. Bettyespana's father in law was Albert b 1901, Lily's older brother.  It's her late husband who was b 1929

I agree this maybe more than likely a the correct Lily Dobson who was my father in law Albert Dobsons sister.

I must also correct a slight error on your last post.My husband John Dobson ( Alberts son) was born 1927 not 1929.Albert Dobson was born 1901 & died 1929.
